Ingredients
This quick & easy toddler meal is perfect for baby-led weaning (BLW) and self-feeding practice. These soft, naturally sweetened pancakes are a nutritious option for every stage of development—helping little ones practice their palmar grasp, pincer grip, and fork skills as they grow.
Instructions:
1. Make the Batter:
- Mash the banana in a bowl until smooth. Add the egg, oats, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and baking powder.
- Stir well to combine. Let the batter sit for 5 minutes to thicken slightly.
2. Cook the Pancakes:
- Heat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat and lightly grease with butter or coconut oil.
- Pour small spoonfuls of batter into the pan, forming mini pancakes. Cook for 2-3 minutes until bubbles appear on the surface.
- Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
3. Serve:
- Let the pancakes cool slightly before serving.
- Serve whole or cut into strips for younger babies.
Choosing Pancake Size & Shape by Developmental Stage
6–9 Months: Palmar Grasp Stage (Whole-Hand Grip)
How to Serve: Cut pancakes into long strips (about the size of an adult finger) to make gripping easier.
Cutlery Tip: Let your baby explore using a spoon, like the Henley Spoon, but expect them to prefer using their hands at this stage.
9–12 Months: Transition to Pincer Grasp (Thumb and Forefinger Grip)
How to Serve: Cut pancakes into bite-sized pieces or serve whole for self-feeding practice.
Cutlery Tip: Offer a toddler-friendly fork, like the Henley Fork, to help with stabbing small pieces.
12+ Months: Improved Coordination & Spoon/Fork Skills
How to Serve: Serve whole with a small dish of yogurt or mashed fruit for dipping.
Cutlery Tip: Encourage your toddler to scoop with a spoon or stab pieces with a fork using the Henley Cutlery Set for a confidence boost at mealtime.
Tips for Baby-Led Weaning:
• Palmar Grasp Stage: Cut pancakes into finger-sized strips for easy gripping. Serve plain or with a light spread of yogurt for dipping.
• Pincer Grasp Stage: Offer bite-sized pieces to encourage fine motor skills and self-feeding.
• Advanced Eaters: Let toddlers practice dipping pancakes into yogurt or mashed fruit for extra engagement.
Freezing Tip:
Make a double batch and freeze extras for a quick, nutritious meal later! Simply reheat in the microwave for 30 seconds or warm in a pan for a fresh-out-of-the-skillet feel. Pair with a Henley Plate for easy scooping and self-feeding success.
