Crispy Veggie Fritters for Baby-Led Weaning & Toddlers

Crispy Veggie Fritters for Baby-Led Weaning & Toddlers

  • 6-8 Small Fritters

  • 15-20 Minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 small zucchini, grated
  • 1 small carrot, grated
  • ¼ cup finely chopped spinach
  • ½ cup grated mild cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour for a gluten-free option)
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder (for fluffiness)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

Optional Add-Ins:
  • ¼ cup mashed sweet potato for extra creaminess
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed for added nutrients
This quick & easy toddler meal is perfect for baby-led weaning (BLW) and self-feeding practice. These soft yet crispy veggie fritters are loaded with nutrients and designed to help little ones practice grasping, biting, and using a fork as they grow.

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Veggies:

  • Grate the zucchini and carrot.
  • Place them in a clean kitchen towel and squeeze out excess moisture to prevent soggy fritters.

2. Make the Batter:

  • In a bowl, mix the grated veggies, chopped spinach, cheese, egg, flour, garlic powder, onion powder, and baking powder.
  • Stir until combined.

3. Cook the Fritters:

  • Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Scoop small portions of batter (about 1 tablespoon each) and flatten slightly.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.

4. Serve:

  • Let the fritters cool slightly before serving.
  • Serve whole or cut into strips for younger babies.

Choosing Fritter Size & Shape by Developmental Stage

6–9 Months: Palmar Grasp Stage (Whole-Hand Grip)

How to Serve: Cut fritters into finger-length strips for easy gripping.
Cutlery Tip: Pre-load a Henley Spoon with mashed fritter pieces to encourage early spoon use.

9–12 Months: Transition to Pincer Grasp (Thumb and Forefinger Grip)

How to Serve: Cut into bite-sized pieces for self-feeding practice.
Cutlery Tip: Offer a Henley Fork to help your little one practice stabbing small pieces.

12+ Months: Improved Coordination & Spoon/Fork Skills

How to Serve: Serve whole or with a side of yogurt for dipping.
Cutlery Tip: Encourage alternating between a spoon and fork to build independent eating skills.

Tips for Baby-Led Weaning:

  • Palmar Grasp Stage: Cut into finger-sized strips for easy grabbing.
  • Pincer Grasp Stage: Offer smaller pieces to refine coordination.
  • Advanced Eaters: Serve with a dip like yogurt or mashed avocado for extra fun.
